In the Smartphone world, Android rules to Microsoft. But however Microsoft finds several violation of their intellectual property in android phones. For solution of this problem Microsoft negotiate with several Android devices manufacturer about intellectual property (IP) agreement. And finally at 27 April, it is announced that HTC agreed to pay royalties for Microsoft patented technology used on their Smartphone base on Android.
This Microsoft htc android agreement is the first and Microsoft is looking forward for many others. Microsoft launched IP licensing program to give two benefits for the companies that is allows company to create partnership and the most important is avoiding law suit for infringement.
Microsoft really concern with it patent, they say that they have built significant patent portfolio so they must take responsibility to make sure no competitors can over ride their innovations freely and this is for the sake of customers, partners and shareholders. For them infringement is a big thing and they proactive to solve this problem with approaching licensing program to other companies. They talk and negotiate with several manufacturers to show their concern to Android platform relatively.
One Microsoft concern is could be about Linux as open source system which always become traditional bone contention. Based on Android developer’s website; for the core system, Android uses Linux kernel v2.6. In October 2007, one of Microsoft CEO suggested that Linux violates various patents.
The IP agreement could be one method by Microsoft to keep an eye on platform development. They need to keep en eye for their Windows Phone 7 competitors.
